It’s a tiny painting, but it’s one of my most popular. It speaks to many - even though people often wonder why it’s called Montserrat: “Isn’t that a mountain, this reminds me more of the sea?”
It’s true that Montserrat is a mountain north west of Barcelona, with it’s spectacular stone formations it’s one of Catalonia’s most popular destinations. But once, just about 65 million years ago, Montserrat was born at the bottom of a sea.
As so often is the case with my art, with “Montserrat” I explored the beginnings. Just as all of us, nature has had many shapes and forms before becoming what it is today. We are not constant - time passed is also part of us - as we change. I think that this tiny painting speaks to us, because it reminds us of where we come from, and that we all carry the beginning of what can become a magnificent mountain inside of us.

Sometimes creating is as easy as a light flows. One thing just follows the other and suddenly the painting is done. Creating The door to everything was like that for me - from the shaping with gesso on the canvas, to the movement and colors.
The summer season of 2015 I had an atelier in Fröjel on my birth island Gotland. It was a magical time, the first time in my life when I could concentrate exclusivly on my creativity, I had the space and time to live in it, to explore and to be me. It was also a time of struggle of making ends meet. The door to everything was the last piece of art that I created that season, September came and all the summer people went home, I wanted to hold on to the feeling of that summer, of the progress I’ve made and who I had became.
The pair of paintings stayed in Fröjel, and still hangs there. It was a commission that I’m very happy I got.

Being a traveler myself, without solid roots anywhere, except maybe for my birth island Gotland, I just cherish the idea that my art to will travel, and touch people all over our planet, I invite more international commissions!

Embracing light was a commission I received in the spring of 2016. At the time I lived by the seaside, just south of Barcelona. What first inspired me was the shifting reflection of light in the big blue of sky and sea, and as I continued to paint, there was a notion of birth and new beginnings. I listened to Madonna’s album Ray of Light while working, her songs from back then - when she first became a mother - created a sense of nurture and unconditional love that I poured into the painting. A few months after I sent the painting to it’s new home I found out they just had their first child.

Some commissions come in the shape of a gift - that was the case with Den blå viken (The blue bay). I was at a place where I had lost inspiration for my art, and I was exhausted, having pushed myself for months at a job where I didn’t thrive. On top of it I had lost my voice from multiple colds - yes I know a symbolic meaning when I see one. in a wayI had also lost my artistic and creative voice.
So - there it was, a text in my phone; “Could you create a painting for Fulvia’s birthday?”
Bad timing or perfect timing?
Fulvia and Joan are dear friends from Catalonia, they’re great nature lovers, especially they’re into birdwatching. Sorry to say, my interest in birdwatching is near non-existing, so I was scared Joan would ask me to paint birds. I said no at first; I was ill, I was tired, I didn’t have the time. But Joan was patient and resilient. Slowly leading me to pick up my paint brushes and open up for inspiration.
As so many times before, inspiration came from the sea, my big blue. Looking to the horizon and seeing the freedom and the choice that is always available to us, I knew I had something to say, I wanted to express myself, I had a voice. Many people could do my job, but I was the only one that could paint this painting. And so I did.
